On April 28, 2009 I had the opportunity to participate in a Poetry of
Resistance event as an artist. I painted the portraits of the Cuban 5,
and brought them in for finishing as part of a collaborative art
project. It was a great chance to share energy, and conversation, with
people from 2 to 62. Enjoy the photos.

The completed paintings laid out on the table. You can see the paints
and tools on the table. The event was at the 519 Church St Community
Centre.

Before and after photos of my painting of Antonio Guerrero. Funny how
people like to put beards and moustaches on people!

Before and after photos of Fernando Gonzalez. Volunteer Michael did
much of this embellishment, although he'd never painted before. It would
often take a fair bit of coaxing to get adults to participate.

Before and after photos of Gerardo Hernandez. I recall one woman
saying Gerardo needed more hair, and promptly painted a beret on his
head. Another woman painted a small logo on the beret.

Before and after photos of Ramon Labanino. His was certainly the one
that drew the most attention from very young children. His
"halo" makes him look almost saint-like!

Before and after photos of Rene Gonzalez. Someone painted "Libertad"
in the corner.
The whole day was completed by noon. Although I was scheduled to be
there until 5pm, I think that any more embellishments of
the artwork would not have added to their energy, but rather would have
detracted from the work of others. The works were allowed to dry, and
then were placed on stage where the poets where performing. They remain at the 519.
